Healing & Metaphysical Properties of Many Gemstones

The following list includes the gemstones/crystals that I have a working knowledge of.  I keep these powerful healers on hand for use in my Chakra Jewelry designs.  As you can see there are many stones to chose from -often stones choose you instead of the other way around.

Amethyst - “The Peace Stone”, “the carrier of the violet ray“. Often used for the 6^th or 7^thchakra. Spiritual upliftment, calms mind, enhances psychic abilities, the stone of spirituality and contentment. Due to this stone’s unique high density vibration it is very useful in healing especially headaches, insomnia and chronic pain. There are exciting developments in medicine using amethyst crystals, far infared heat and negative ions to heal many, many ailments today using what is known as the Amethyst Biomat. Amethyst is an awesome stone!

Aventurine - like many gemstones, there are several varieties, all are useful as touchstones & are also used in chakra jewelry (especially Green), see below:

Green - Promotes physical healing, promotes heart’s new growth (spiritual), 4^th chakra

Blue - Helps with circulation

Orange/Red - Physical healing (2^nd chakra)

Carnelian - Helps with creative visualization, “it is a symbol of the warm, vitalizing & positive energy of the earth”, dispels apathy, raises moods, works well with 1^st four chakras. It is a very powerful grounding gemstone. It is the “carrier of the orange ray“. Often used for the 2^nd chakra.

Black Onyx - the stone of self-mastery & life-purpose, grounding & protective - will absorb & deflect negative energy, balances the yin/yang energy, draws good fortune, enables 3^rd eye. Note: Yin is represented by Black.

Citrine - this stone”the carrier of the yellow ray“, is a variety of quartz able to weaken & change negative energy, the lighter shades promote clarity of thought, helps in problem solving, supports the body, often used for 3^rd chakra.

Calcite - Orange - used for the 3^rd chakra it is a powerful crystal for energy amplification and healing. It aids in memory, clears the chakra centers and helps to open the crown chakra (7^th). Unfortunately this stone is very hard to come by so I often use it's close relative Aragonite.

Aragonite - Orange/Yellow - very similar in structure and chemical composition to calcite above.  It is a dimorphous calcium carbonate that usually grows as twin crystals in clusters. It is semi-transparent and is light orange to yellow/honey in color.  It is used for the solar plexus chakra (3).

Garnet - That which is a deep red is a very powerful gemstone. It “is associated with the kundalini-fire of transformation, the integrating fire that assists kundalini up the spinal column.” It is used as a 1^st chakra stone. It is strongly grounding, stimulates the imagination, offers physical improvement to the wearer, as well it can assist with opening of the 3^rd eye.

Hematite - metallic grey/black is the color of this grounding & stabilizing gemstone, it reflects negative/intrusive energy back to its point of origin. Used for the 1^st chakra. Can aid in stress reduction, calm/focus the emotions and balance yin/yang energies.

Lapis Lazuli - Deep blue gemstone known and used since at least the time of the Egyptians - is seen in many pieces of royal Egyptian art. Thought to be “the all-healing stone, it is connected w/ both the 5^th(throat) and 6^th (brow/3^rd eye) chakras.” “Speech our highest attribute….” is attained via the throat - Lapis lazuli energizes the throat chakra. It is also the stone of teachers. It helps us to attain higher thought and awareness via 6^th chakra. Genuine Lapis Lazuli is characterized by flakes of pyrite.  Major sources today include Afganistan, Russia & Chile.

Sodalite - is a medium to deep blue stone w/white marbling. It is often used to alleviate insomnia or protect from external negative energy. It is calming. It is used to enhance intent, focus, and perception. It is useful as a 6^th chakra stone.

Snowflake Obsidian - This crystal is actually a type of volcanic glass in which grey feldspar inclusions appeared as the obsidian cystallized. It is opaque and is black with white spots.  Because it is black and white is an equivalent representation of the Chinese Yin/Yang symbol.  The unity of opposites that create life. Likewise it can be used for the root chakra(black) or the crown chakra(white).  It is a stone that signifies new beginnings and hope.  Can increase circualtion.  Can offer protection and good fortune.  Can increase clairaudient powers or when trying to discern the truth about a person or situation.

Moonstone - White This stone is a type of feldspar. Sometimes used for Chakra 2. It is connected to “Goddess” and “Mother” energies. It is an ancient spiritual stone. “It is connected to the moon and the female aspect of our emotional nature” It helps to balance emotions and promote happiness. It should come in an almost transparent or creamy white color. The flash of blue within the stone communicates insight. This stone is valuable for both women and men alike. “The moonstone is a stone of inner growth and strength, assisting our soul in its progress”.

Rainbow Moonstone - This is a particualrily opalescent type of feldspar.  The iridescence is caused by tiny prismatic fractures that reflect rainbows.  It shimmers with rainbow brilliance in light. It is used for the sacral chakra (2).   Chakra 2 is the home of our emotions, our genitals, kidneys, bladder, womb and circulatory system.  The celestial body associated with chakra two is the Moon and some of the minerals noted are Carnelian, Coral and Moonstone.  For additional healing/metaphysical properties of Rainbow Moonstone refer to White Moonstone (above).

Pearl - White “The jewel of the sea” Found in the shell of oysters, take note that the pearl starts out as an “irritant” to the oyster but over time is transformed into a thing of great beauty - this represents our own struggle for inner growth. The pearl can aid us w/the painful process of self-confrontation.

Malachite - is very green stone patterned w/dark/black spirals, bands & eyes. It is a stone symbolic of change and creativity. It is often used for the heart chakra 4^th. It can assist by “changes negative situations, releases negative experiences, inspires hope, roots out buried feelings, prevents psychic attacks, connects seen to unseen…”.

Red/Orange Agate - Orange and semi-transparent often with colored bands. This stone which is a variegated class of chalcedony is often used for the 2^nd chakra. It acts to smooth dysfunctional energies and both transforms and eliminates negativity. Balancer of yin-yang energy.

Fire Agate - This strongly grounding & protective stone is very effective at bringing about a deep sense of calmness & security to it's wearer.  It comes in the variegated colors of fire - Browns, deep reds and deep red-oranges.  It is used for the root chakra(1) since it is so very grounding.  

Mookaite -

Apatite - This beautiful crystal comes in light to bright blue to dark blue. Broad color variation is sometimes within the same crystal.  It has complex chemical phosphate structure of calcium, chlorine & fluorine.  It is opaque and shiny when polished.  It is a wonderful stone for meditation.  It can increase clairvoyance & clairsentience as well as clairaudience and past-life recall.  It is used for the Throat (5) and occasionally the Brow (6) chakra.

Sunstone - This shimmery stone is another type of feldspar.  The color ranges from gentle orange to a vivid tangerine.  It flashes opalescent golden yellow and orange, the more common kind is softer orange with a red or golden sheen.  In ancient mythology people believed sunstone held a piece of the sun.  It was highly prized by magicians who sought to harness and wield the power of the sun.  Today it is associated with prosperity and good fortune.  It can help heal Seasonal Affective Disorder, it useful at alleviating anxiety and phobias and may be able to help shy children become more outgoing.  In chakra jewelry it is used for the solar plexus (3) chakra.

Labradoite - This gemstone/crystal is a type of feldspar.  It is related to the moonstone and the sunstone.  It is said to be a protective stone, known for deflecting unwanted energies from the aura and preventing energy leakage.  It can raise consciousness and ground spiritual energies into the body.  Synthesizes intellectual thought w/the intuition. The stone of Truth.  Advances our growth through truth and honesty.

Blue Lace Agate - Related to above stone - this one is more opaque but it’s color is a magnificent pale periwinkle blue with lacy bands. A very pretty stone. It acts to calm and soothe the nervous system, while awakening the unconscious and stretching the imagination. Used for the throat chakra (5th).

Angelite - This crystal is smooth and opaque. It is pale or mid to celestial blue-lilac or violet in color.  It is used for the Throat Chakra(5).  Used as a peacemaking stone.  Angelite amplifies healing with sound, whether a single voice or a group singing Buddhist or Gregorian chants.  It encourages sensitivity and kindness - it is an antidote to abrasive people at home/work.  Deflects cruelty and violence and protects against prejudice and intolerance.  Place angelite in the ground when burying pets.

Lepidolite - This purple crystal ranges in color from violet to lavender to pink.  Can be Transparent or translucent and shiny.  It is a hydrous potassium lithium aluminum silicate.  Lithium gives the crystal its color.  It is used for the crown(7) and brow(6) chakras.  In mythology each lepidoIite crystal is believed to have it's own keeper - a guardian angel that is said to choose you.  It is known as a powerful pain remover, detoxifier (whether it be substance abuse or pollution), aids with mental disorders, helps guide us forward away from problems that weigh us down.  Helps remove negative emotions from the environment.  Helps protect the psychic individual.

Moss Agate - comes in many shades of green & is mossy in appearance. An excellent touchstone. Connects the physical to the spiritual, protects the aura, helps to heal the inner child. Useful to keep in touch with nature and unconditional love.

Peridot - this yellow-green semi-transparent stone offers healing protection for healers, brings energy in from the aura to the physical body, helps to strengthen, detoxify and heal physical glands/organs.

Bloodstone -  Can be used for 1^st chakra.(aka Heliotrope) is green w/red flecks of jasper. “These drops of blood contain much iron and work on the four elements to balance out iron deficiencies in the bloodstream”. A good stone for stress-reduction and revitalization, and psychic healing. Can facilitate contact with deceased ancestors.

Red Jasper - A reddish-brown opaque stone. Very protective with many ancient associations. “When polished, it makes a beautiful jewel, reminding us of the colors of the earth. Highly regarded as the mother of all stones, for it carries powerful magical properties.” The stone assists with grounding energy and is often used for 1^st or 2^nd chakras.

Fancy Jasper - the “supreme nurturer”, a protective stone, comes in a variety of variegated colors and is somewhat transparent.

Leopard skin Jasper - This is another variety of jasper. This stone features pinks, tans and dark grey/blacks in a leopard skin pattern. There are many more varieties of jasper available to name a few - picture jasper, sesame jasper, autumn jasper & and ocean jasper.

Jade - the color of this stone will vary from pale green (sometimes even white) to dark green in color depending on origin. It is the ancient stone of relaxation and wisdom and peace. It’s effects are not felt immediately due to it’s subtle impact but long-term exposure to jade is of great benefit. It is the giver of the virtues: humility, wisdom and courage and raises our consciousness. It is often used for the 4^th chakra.

Jade - Yellow/Honey

Chrysoprase - an apple-green semi-transparent gemstone often used for the 4^th chakra. It offers the user spiritual protection. Promotes self-acceptance, is calming and helps to clarify jumbled thoughts. Aids in development of higher consciousness.

Lemon Crysoprase - is a lemon yellow to yellowy-green Chalcedony type of mineral w/Nickel.  It is opaque.  It is useful for the solar plexus chakra (3rd).

Dumortierite - This opaque stone usually comes in a blue-jean blue coloring.  It is known for enhancement of organizational abilities, self-discipline & orderliness.  It balances the throat chakra (5th) and enhances communication between lower chakras physical energy(1-4) and the higher chakras (5-7) mental/spiritual energy. Laughter is associated with this stone.

Chrysocolla - is a dark green-blue opaque gemstone. It is known for it’s calming abilities and can improve communications and 3^rd eye visions and meditations. It brings peace to the heart and mind. Can be used for the 5^th chakra.

Red Coral - “One of the five sacred stones of the Tibetans and the American Indians. It symbolizes life force energy (prana).” Coral offers emotional foundation resulting in calmness and a firm sense of grounding. Often used for the 1^st and 2^nd chakra.

Rose Quartz- is a pale pink semi-opaque stone. The stone is associated with the heart chakra (4^th) because it is known to heal deep emotional wounds. It aids in emotional balance, helps us with self-acceptance, compassion for others, eases pain and tension and repels negativity.

Tiger’s Eye - A beautiful stone of brown with golden striping. Associated with strength, energy and good luck (helps you to recognize karmic ties), instills calm, provides a powerful sense of grounding, protects against psychic attack, returns negative energy. Often used for 3^rd chakra. This stone is the master of Materialism - it can aid one in the recognition of one's materialistic drives & acts as a strong touchstone to assist one in overcoming those drives.

Red Tiger'sEye - This stone is red with dark to light banding.  Like all Tiger's Eye it is an Oxide Quartz which reflects light in wavy lines.  That's what gives it the eye appearance.  Red Tiger's Eye is thought to help with female menstrual disturbances - restoring natural rhythms, it can sharpen night vision.  Use it to promote post-surgical healing and to relieve depression.  It is a good stone for bringing prosperity and good luck to the home.  Use it when you travel to increase your safety.  It is used for the root chakra (1) in jewelry. Additionally it is thought to enhance/strengthen one's ability to interact w/energy (psychic, interpersonal, earth) in a calm and serene manner.

Turquoise - “One of the five sacred stones of the Tibetans and the American Indians. - they believe that it holds the atmosphere surrounding the earth and sky, giving life and breath. Both cultures combine it with coral for polarity (earth - red, spirit - blue).“ Used for protection, healing, good luck and longevity. “Strong healing vibrations are magnified by high copper content”. Often used for 5^th chakra. Also called “Fallen Skystone”.

Quartz Crystal - This stone is clear and colorless. It is an all level grounding and balance (aligns body, chakras, aura, spirit), works with all the color rays, assists in focus, clarity and higher awareness. It is invigorating and aids in opening of the 3^rd eye during meditaion. Very potent transpersonal stone. Used most for the 7^th chakra.

Howlite - Sometimes called “Bufalo Turquoise”, this stone is naturally white with metallic marbling. It aids in calcium absorption and distribution. Known as the stone of memory, knowledge and progress. It enhances higher awareness. It can be used for the 7^th - crown chakra

Amazonite - is a beautiful opaque green stone that varies in hue. Known to improve self-worth (lessens self-defeating behaviours & self-defeating talk), soothe the nervous system and absorb negative energy. Often used for the 4^th chakra. Called the stone of Courage - it helps to make a courageous heart & assists those destined to do good in the world.  It is a powerful stone useful in diffusing anger & irritability, helps you keep work at work and home at home. It combats sexism.  It can assist you w/focus and timing which can bring you great success at work.  It has been said to be beneficial to activate lazy teenagers & slovenly children.  It is an excellent crystal for working w/nature spirits and other natural forces.

Rhodonite - This is an opaque mauve-pink gemstone with charcoal/black veins. It is named after the Greek word for rose (rhodon). The stone is balancing and can assist during the resolution of unfinished emotional traumas. Known for awakening mind/body to the spirit, and increasing self-love and whole-person integration. Sometimes used for the heart chakra (4^th).

Smoky Quartz - Another variation of quartz this one is “smoky” - the stone is mostly clear and the color or density of smokiness will vary depending on amount of natural radiation occurring at its origin. It dissipates negativity, balances mind/body energies, protective and grounding and it can enhance dream awareness and channeling abilities.

Fluorite - Purple/Lavender a wonderful gemstone for enhancement of meditation, mental clarity, and spiritual awakening. Often used for the 6^th chakra as it is reputed to promote opening of the 3^rd eye. This stone is also used for the crown(7) chakra.

Fluorite - Green this wonderful variety of fluorite is valuable for promoting healing on all levels. It represents well-being and harmony w/the earth. Calming to the nervous system it is good for mild emotional traumas.
